Baccarat Test Answers

1. The answer is A. Total as close to 9 as possible

In baccarat, the player’s hand competes with the banker’s hand and the closest to 9 is the winner. Players may bet on the banker’s hand, the player’s hand or on a tie.

Cards 2 through 9 are counted at their face value. Aces are worth 1 and tens, jacks, queens and kings are worth zero. If the total of two or sometimes three cards is greater than ten then only the second number is counted.

2. The answer is B. To bet on the banker or the player or a tie

Players are not allowed to make decisions on hitting or standing in baccarat. The rules of the game determine whether a hand receives a third card. This makes baccarat a basic guessing game. Will the banker win or will the player win or will they tie?

3. The answer is B. Is more than the house advantage in blackjack against a player who plays basic strategy.

A blackjack player who plays basic strategy can reduce the house advantage to about 0.5% or more depending on the rules. Baccarat has a house advantage of 1.17 % on the banker, 1.36% on the player and 14% on a tie.

Even so, for a wager that requires not skill or strategy, baccarat bets on the banker or player are among the best in a casino.

4. The answer is A. On the banker

As you can see from the answer to number 3, the banker has slightly better odds than a bet on the player.

5. The answer is A. Will win more than it loses

The banker will win slightly over 50% of the hands that do not result in a tie. If you bet on the banker forever, you’ll win more times than you lose. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be profitable, as the house collects a 5% commission on all banker bet wins.

6. The answer is B. Will lose more than it will win

A player bet will win slightly under 50% of the time of hands that do not result in a tie. Winning player bets do not have to pay a commission and the house gains an edge by this bet losing more times than it wins.

7. The answer is C. Never

Although most players should never bet on a tie because of the large house advantage of 14%, there may be times when this bet is profitable. See number 10.

8. The answer is A. The game move slower with players dealing the cards

Baccarat at a big table is different in many ways from mini-baccarat. In a high limit game in Vegas, there is more emphasis placed on ceremony as the shoe is passed from player to player with the dealer giving instructions. Players gather their cards and spread them slowly. At a mini-baccarat table, you never see this. Cards are dealt as fast as possible and the cards are never touched by the players.

9. The answer is A. Regular baccarat

Speed is never a good thing in any casino game. Because more hands are dealt per hour in mini-baccarat as opposed to big baccarat, players play faster resulting in more losses per hour

10. The answer is B. Increase your edge in certain circumstances

It is rare that favorable circumstances arise. In his book, The Theory of Blackjack, Peter Griffin writes, “a player who doesn’t bet unless he has an advantage can squeeze an edge of 0.7 percent of his maximum bets on banker and player”. But that player may only play about three hands in about 8 hours. That is not playing, it’s watching.

When betting on a tie, it is possible to get a 24% advantage with only six cards left in the deck. But, in the real world, all the cards are rarely ever dealt out. If there is only a half deck of cards left in play the player’s advantage on the last hand is reduced to only 0.8%.
